WS-CIM
Asad Faizi, Microsoft
CIM-based management in a Web services environment requires that the CIM Schema (classes, properties and methods) be rendered in XML Schema and WSDL. To achieve this, the CIM must be mapped to WSDL and XML Schema via an explicit algorithm that can be programmed for automatic translation. Interoperability in heterogeneous environment requires that XML Schema, WSDL and Metadata definition be common for different WS based management protocols, such as WS-Management and WSDM.
WS-CIM Mapping Specification is part of a family of Web Services based management specifications, which included WS-Management, WSDM, and Protocol Binding specifications. WS-CIM is a set of normative rules and recommendations to define the mapping of the structure of CIM classes into XML Schema, methods and parameters of CIM class into WSDL fragments, and metadata of CIM class into metadata fragments. It does not define the protocol details, which are defined in WS-Management and WSDM protocol specification; it does not define compete WSDL, including binding details, which are defined in WS-CIM binding spec; and it does not define the metadata container, which is left to the specific protocol.
WSDM tutorial
Kirk Wilson, CA, Inc.
Web Services Distributed Management (WSDM) is a set of specifications published by Oasis that describes how web services can be used to manage IT resources. A description of how WSDM can be mapped to CIM has recently been completed and shows how the power of CIM models is combined with the power of web services to effectively build web-based management solutions. The full features of both CIM and WSDM are exploited.

This a presentation will present a browser-based demo using live, remote managed end-point systems, and show essential architectural features of the mapping.
Heterogeneous management integration with WS-Management
Josh Cohen, Microsoft
Heterogeneous Application Systems Management and problem solving by example Enterprise administrators are often required to monitor internal line of business applications. These applications are often spread across multiple system types, operating systems, and application platforms. With the integration of WS-Management cross platform web services technologies in Windows, IT administrators can use Windows as a flexible management platform to manage different types of Applications, Operating Systems and Hardware.
This session will illustrate strategies for 1) Monitoring Agent-less Unix systems such as Solaris and Linux 2) Integration with home-grown or 3rd party infrastructure and applications. 3) Forward events from Desktops and Servers running Windows and Unix to a central log store 4) Monitor Hardware directly independent of operating system state.
The session is presented as a tutorial with embedded demos to illustrate these scenarios. Presenter will show these cases first hand to show how monitoring and troubleshooting are done. The session will show the use of the new Microsoft Windows WS-Management platform technologies as well as the open source WISEMAN Java implementation of WS-Management.
After this session, attendees should be able to return home to their enterprise and use the techniques illustrated here to implement similar ideas in their environment.
Leveraging OPMA to Quickly Support WS-Management
Valerie Kane, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
Dave Tobias, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
Steffen Hulegaard, Avocent
Barry Shilmover, Microsoft
WS-Management consoles for remote management will soon be commercially available, but legacy platforms may not be able to support out of band communications using this new interface because the existing management subsystem does not support it and may not have sufficient local resources to be field upgraded. One way to support rapid time to market for such new technologies is to leverage modular management subsystems which support the Open Platform Management Architecture (OPMA). This session will include a demonstration of MOM managing two different OPMA and WS-Management enabled platforms.
WS-Management for Free
Anas Nashif, Intel
This session provides an architectural overview of the Openwsman project and will guide developers through the various tools and frameworks currently available on Linux which make the development of an opensource implementation of WS-Management possible.
The openwsman project is primarily designed for host environments and leverages existing tools and resources to expose a complete system view using WS-management.
Wiseman: An Open Source Implementation of WS-CIM & WS-Management
William Reichardt, Oracle
Simeon Pinder, Hewlett Packard
Daniel Fuchs, Sun
This presentation will discuss how Wiseman can WS-Man enable your java applications. Wiseman is an open source project sponsored by Java.net that implements the WS-Man specification in the Java 5.0 environment. An overview of WS-Man will be provided and examples of resource creation and client access will be discussed. There will also be a demonstration of a sample WS-Man enabled application.
Using WS-Management in Oracle Enterprise Manager
Guru Bhat, Oracle Corporation
This presentation explains how Oracle uses the WS-Management standard in upcoming versions of its enterprise management application - Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control. A brief overview of WS-Management is included for those not familiar with this standard.
